One of my sisters is moving to live in Dallas for a year. They only have a few weeks to prepare for their departure and she was telling me how proud I would be of her ‘decluttering’, especially her wardrobe. I am always telling my sisters that they have far too many clothes hanging in their wardrobes! My sister said, ‘I feel so happy about what I have cleared out and how my wardrobe looks now’. And that’s the thing, the wonderful feeling you receive after you have done the job. It’s quite liberating. Winter is here and if your wardrobe looks like this, it’s time to do a declutter. Trust me you will feel fantastic!, you will have an organised wardrobe which will make your life so much easier and you will love what you are wearing which will make you feel great! I do this process every season.
- Find a time when you are feeling relaxed and happy to do your declutter. Grab a glass of wine, play your favourite music, and big plastic bags. This may take a few hours, so allow for this! Remember at the end of this process, you will have a wardrobe that you are happy to face each day!
- Sort every garment into one of three piles – KEEP/TOSS/MAYBE.
KEEP-clothes you love and wear every week. TOSS-clothes that you don’t fit (be honest, if something is too small, are you going to ever fit it?), bad buys (usually bought in sales!) anything that you have not worn last season (if you never wore it last season, then there is a reason) and anything that is looking shabby (oh and you only need one old t-shirt and trackies for the gardening/housework!). MAYBE – Ask yourself why they are not in the KEEP pile? If you still don’t know, put into a plastic storage box for six months, if you have not gone and worn, then there is your answer! - Put the KEEP pile back into your wardrobe. I like to organise everything into groups ie shirts, skirts, pants and by colour.
Invest in wooden hangers and only one garment per hanger! Now you can see where your gaps are for your next shopping trip. - Decide where the TOSS pile is going- recycle shop for resale, trade me, friends, charity, or bin!
- Put the MAYBE box into storage, somewhere outside your wardrobe. Let’s see if you remember it!
Then do this process for your accessories/underwear/hosiery, socks/shoes.
At this stage, I can guarantee you will be feeling maybe a little weary, but looking at your new organised wardrobe will make you feel excited and put a smile on your face. This is a very ‘cleansing’ experience.
